: The hull of my Cape Ann Double is ready to glass. I will be trying Raka's 5oz
: and will be applying a seal coat per Larry's instructions.
: My wood working experience so far has been in furniture, rifle stocks and the
: like. Consequently, I have prepped the surface of the hull to baby smooth
: down to using 0000 steel wool. While I wait for the glass to arrive, I
: have been going back through all the books and information I have on kayak
: building. The information I see talks about sanding with 120 grit.
: Have I gone too far for good epoxy adhesion? I am using West System epoxy.
: My gut is trying to tell me that the wood (WRC & Doug Fir) is porous and
: will absorb the epoxy for a good bond. The problem is that I am a type A
: and a worry wart.
: Any helpful experience or thoughts out there?
I went to the West site and they say prep with 80 grit.I would, wouldn,to want that fine kayak peel like an onion.I used a cabinet scraper on the raised grain after the no blush expoxy set very hard. I would try to get the glass on the West as soon as it gelled, tend to blush more than others, used it on the first kayak and had to clean and sand, strong yak, time wave tested.
In theory you shouldn't get any water to the steel fibers but the clean wood is better for the epoxy any way.
My son and I are going to build one, how about some pic's
