Taylor,
I'm no craftsman but I just used a standard jigsaw with Bosch blades. I cut a starter slot with a razor knife and off I went. My hatches are oval so that seemed the best scenario. I've heard people talk about japanese pull saws and such things so I am sure there is some value to that route also.
