: Thanks, Bobby, Ross and Myrl,

: IŽll have to stare at my boat for a few days to decide what to do.

: Ross, if I round the edge of the deck over, and hit the wood, it will show up
: as a discoloured spot after taping, right? I probably should have rounded
: over the deck before glassing, if I wanted to take that route...

You know, I honestly don't remember for sure if I rounded the edge off before
or after I glassed the deck. I was waffling on whether I wanted the sheer
guard, as well. Although I used the offsets from KayakCraft, I didn't follow
Moores' methods at all. I basically pretended I was building a Great Auk
and mostly followed Nick's book.

I think I glassed first, and then rounded, but I can't swear to it. I don't
notice any discoloration, at any rate, but I have also heard that can be a
problem. I guess you'll have to decide if you want to take that risk.
You could do a test on some scrap, and see what happens. Even if it did
discolor, it might look okay since it would be a very even line of
discoloration. It might not offend the eye as much as an irregular blotch
in the middle of a panel would.

I will go back and take a look at the photos I took and see if I can tell
for sure which order I did it in.

: My main reason for disliking the sheer guard is that I cannot figure out how
: this joint is supposed to stay waterproof over any lenght of time,
: especially at the ends.

Me too. I built a Mill Creek with a sheer clamp and a sheer guard, and it
did not stay waterproof at the joint. I have more confidence in the tape.
I also think the sheer guard makes the boat look a little too much like a
canoe, but's that's just personal preference.
