: I just went to the currency converter in the net and found that you paid
: $488.00 US for your supplies. That's a whole bunch of money, CDN or USD.
: You can get Raka for about $85.00 (us) or the brand mentioned in the post
: below for less than that even...Even with shipping , that's a considerable
: savings. Also, Clark Craft of Tonowanda, NY offers boatbuilding epoxy and
: they are right across the Ontario border near Niagra Falls.

If Clark-Craft is a conenient sourse, the here is one other tip about buying materials from them. They offer packages of glass cloth and epoxy resin with their boat building kits. find a boat which is close to the size of the one you are building, and see if their fiberglassing kit is a better buy than the total of the individual components. if you call them they will tell you how much glass cloth an resin in included in each kit -- but they list these kits by the name of the boat design, so a few minutes of searching their online catalog might save you $10 to $30.

For example: If I was going to build a 17 to 18 foot cedar strip kayak I'd need I'd need 6 yards of glass cloth (18 feet) for just the outside of the hull. The inside of the hull would take a similar length, and the deck would alos need two 6 yard pieces (1 for the inside and one for the outside) that is a total of 24 yards of fabric. Clark Craft wants $7 a yard for 38 inch wide, 6 ounce fabric, so the price would be $168 for the cloth. A gallon of resin would be another $55, for a total of $223. In comparison, Clark-craft sells a kit for glassing their 17 foot cedar strip kayak (the Endeavour design) for $195, or a savings of $28.

Now if I wanted to use their 3.2 ounce glass cloth I'd probably be better off buying it by the yard at $3.20 a yard, instead of going with the kit.

There are places to buy similar materials for less money, if you want to do more shopping, but I'm not sure how well those savings would hold up after shipping to Canada. Nonetheless, clark-Craft has good materials, great service, and they provide a good benchmark for materials prices.

Hope this helps
