I like your explanation (Does that just mean you take a rectangular piece of fiberglass and turn it at an angle, in which case it would be pointy at both ends?) of bias, sounds like you understand what it is.
I found that by draping the glass on the bias over the hull it could be laid down smoothly at the bow and stern. I use a foam brush and a lot of fidgeting with the cloth to smooth it out. I use a wide piece of cloth that overhangs the hull by at leas six inches on each side. I also end up wih a lot of waste, but it does lay down smooth without having to cut it. I don’t know if it will work for your canoe, but it’s worth a try.
