I thought tighter weave/smoothness was the value-add of the 5oz cloth. You could do a very light/fairly strong layup using just 5oz cloth. I really like the smoothness of the 3.2oz satin weave (two layers) I used on my last boat. I wouldn't hesitate to use the 5oz on a smaller 17' boat.
