Salt water is a *)(*&*^%^$%#. It eats everything metal except good stainless, good brass and bronze. Even Aluminum will corrode if unprotected by paint. If you're set on magnets you might try a test of the rubber ones, but I don't think they will give you the holding power you need.

As for the gulf, shallow water kicks up quick. Practice self rescue techniques
