...I'm
: counting on the Raka guys to have solved the problems of the past and give
: me some good advice on how to put this stuff down.
: The other option, inspired by Jim Kozel, is the 4oz s-glass. It sounds like
: he had a good experience with it.
: My first question is: are these two options close enough from a physical
: properties standpoint as to not make a big difference in
: strength/durability?
: Second: If using Nick's standard layup, should I just substitute whatever
: fabric I go with for his recomended coverages with 6oz?
: Are neither of these as good as the 6oz standard layup Nick suggests? Is
: there any real weight savings with one of these over a standard layup? Or
: should I stop thinking, and put down simple ol' 6oz on the whole boat!
: thanks
: Rob
Rob,
I’m not sure how the Raka guys could have solved the problems with the 5 oz. I read Larry’s post (recent past) and appreciate his effort, but I saw no suggestions for working with the 5 oz that people like Nick, Rob (Macks), and anyone else with enough experience don’t already suggest.
The 4 oz S-glass and 5 oz E-glass options should not be much different in terms of strength, but Ted’s results suggest that the s-glass will be more durable – as in fewer cosmetic dings. Either way, the coverage scheme that Nick suggests will serve well. As for real weight savings, my calculations show a weight difference between 6 oz at 0.4 fiber volume fraction, and 5 oz at 0.6 fiber volume fraction of around 3 lbs (single layer inside and out, 50 square foot of hull and deck). There will be more fill coats with the 6 oz, but not much more if the squeegee leaves behind 0.4 fiber volume fraction.
