I'm with you. The plastic and stamped metal ones don't belong on boats that are this pretty.
I have started a MC-13 and have been kicking around an idea for ones made out of Oak or some other hardwood that would take the clamping pressure.
Basically, you'd take a block of oak and mill it with a lip to fit over the coaming and extend almost to the inside bottom of the coaming, making in effect a wooden slide. Into this two holes are drilled. One from side to side on the centerline and large enough to accept an epoxied 1/4-20 that would extend out the bottom through an intersecting hole. Knurled knob to thghten it up...Fabricate the appropriate rod holder at the appropriate angle to be attached to the block. Wood would be nice, but may be too clunky looking. A piece of sheet brass might be the ticket to fabricate the rod holder part of the assembly.
Still in the planning stages, but it's a thought. A long thought, but a thought nonetheless
