Just guessing but I know that if I rinse my booties off in fresh water, they get smelly a lot faster that if I don't. I suspect salt water doesn't grow mildew and other smelly things like fresh water does. Same goes for paddling and surfing clothes. On the other hand, metal gets devastated if not rinsed. I always rinse and dry anything metal. My take would be to rinse off only if you can dry it well right away, otherwise, leave the salt on, it inhibits growies.
