I used Douglas fir flooring for a few parts in my first boat. It's heavy and it doesn't machine well (it splinters, often explosively). I won't use it again. As for wood sources, try Jackson Lumber in Lawrence. They often get wood in longer than 16' sizes, if you need it. Yankee Pine in Rowley comes highly recommended by a couple of friends of mine, but I've never been in. It's across the street from New England Small Craft, so it's worth the trip if you need any other gear or supplies (NESC carries a good selection of rigging materials). I'm up in Nashua and there are couple of decent sources up here too, if they would be of interest to you.
