: To sharpen a low angle block plane is it a good idea to purchase a honing
: guide and angle jig? The Veritas system costs around $33 in combo or I can
: get the guide separately for around $12. Do I need both?

: Also, if I don't use the sandpaper and glass sharpening method, what grit
: waterstones would you suggest?

: Thanks

If you go the waterstone route, which is what I recommend, you'll also need something to keep the waterstones flat. You can use sandpaper taped to glass or another flat surface like the top of a tablesaw to flatten the stones. Drywall sanding screen works pretty good too. To sharpen tools, I've tried everything from sandpaper, diamnond stones, waterstones, felt wheels and the relatively new Shapton ceramic waterstones. If anyone wants to know anything more specific, just ask.
