: Mike: what layup did you use all together? How may layers on the outside?
: 3.25 oz?! Do you think it'll be tough enough? How do you expect to use the

Rob-

Know what you mean. Today was a half-pot day for me.

The first two boats were what I think Nick described in his book as Medium weight. Single layer of 4oz plain out and in of deck, with beefing around cockpit. Single layer of 6 oz out and in hull, with extra layer of 6oz on bottom of hull.

The last two boats: One layer of 3.25 oz satin in and outside deck, one layer 3.25 oz satin outside hull, extra layer 6 oz on bottom, with 1.8 oz kevlar inside hull.

The boats held up well last year. Day use in salt water creeks and bays, some fishing, little surf of big rocks.

My thoughts about this layup: I hoped that the 3.25 satin would give me approximately the performance of the 4 oz plain, and that the kevlar would give me as much tensile performance as at least one layer of 6 oz plain. (Two layers of 6 oz plain glass cut more easily than 1 layer 1.8 oz kevlar, but I haven't a clue what that will translate to in the real world).

I didn't have any trouble at all wetting out the 3.25 satin with MAS, although it did give some bubbles when taping the outside seam, so next boat I'll probably use 4 oz plain for the outside seam. On the inside, I left the hull kevlar wild about three inches above the shear, them just wet it out after joining the deck, so there is a continuous layer from the hull three inches into the deck. I added an extra layer of bias-cut strips of kevlar over the joint, so there are two layers over the seam inside (kevlar) and two layers of 3.25 satin over the outside seam. There are quite a few bubbles on the inside seam, too.

I think (hope?)it'll work. :) Mike
