I went with thicker strips in the back and sanded them out. I actually made the strips thick enough that I had to sand them down top and bottom. I was more cocerned about the fit that the thickness. The thickness can always be fixed if it's too thick.

Good luck, and don't be afraid to try something that noone suggests. Worse case scenario, you cut out that part of the opening again.
