Thanks Steve,
Here is what I used on the boat.
Sheer and Keel - Douglas Fir. I would not recommend it. It tore out and did not add any significant interest in my opinion.
Bottom - Pretty much random WRC. I was learning and just did not pay too much attention to how the strips were layed up. I actually sort of like the randomness of the bottom.
On the topsides- I found a couple of very dark WRC and that is the really dark strips you see. The accent were 2 strips of clear 1/4 " pine tapered to a point. About 6" from the end and sandwiched between the small pine strips I alternated a really dark magenta/red WRC with pine. I started out with 1/4" pieces and every pair of pieces was scaled up 1/4" to the midships and then I started back down and ended up at 1/4". Sandwiching them between the two little strips made gluing the strip up much easier. I then went back to strips of the dark WRC followed up with some really orange WRC. It is a little busy but it came out OK.
Combing and Stems - The bow and stern have laminated Ash stems. The combing is laminated Ash on WRC vertical strips. Here is another picture.
Again thanks for the kind words. You all make the newbies feel really welcome.
Jay
