That's it. Less water will be retained in the pump body if it is cylidrical, but you could fill the corners of a box with foam or balsa or something. The one I'm working on has a wood veneer and glass cylinder for the pump body bonded between two vertical supports. The ID of the cylinder is 4 inches (for a Guzzler diaphragm), which matches nicely with the OD of a 3 inch PVC cap or straight union. So, I wrapped one of those with veneer and a little glass to form the body. Assuming you don't have a pump to measure, you can figure out the basic dimensions from the diaphragm and flapper valves in a rebuild kit.
