How much are you willing to spend to build a kayak? What are you going to use the kayak for, and how often? What are your woodworking skills? What woodworking tools do you already have? These are some of the questions you may want to ask yourself.

The wooden kayak kits I know of can range from $600 to $1500. I started with a kit because I had never worked with epoxy before. For me it was a good choice as I found there was a lot to learn. Since then, I've built boats without a kit, but find that the costs for good marine grade materials and some of the tools needed to make kayaks from scratch can be comparable to the material costs for kits.

If you want an inexpensive kayak, you may want to consider a Skin On Frame.
