: It sounded like something fun to do building a kayak and perhaps saving some
: money. But, looking at the kits they are awefully expensive. How costly
: and more difficult is it to build your own and buy all the wood and stuff
: at a hardware store?

Part of the equation depends on your skills as a woodworker - I've never taken on a woodworking job like this before (strip-building a Night Heron) so I bought a complete kit from Newfound Woodworks and I'm glad I did - I'd never have been able to mill the strips with anything like the precision that they did. Also a good kit supplier can give you a wide range of choices of wood and provide personalized response to building questions. On the other hand, I could probably buy a good used fiberglass kayak for what I've spent so far. On the other hand again, if you do a good job your wooden boat will be priceless (and may start a dangerous habit), and you'll wind up owning and knowing how to use lots of great tools that you might not have bought otherwise :-) .
