I didn't glass the lip. Just figured that a hard wood such as Ash, with a good coat of epoxy, would hold up to the type of wear it will receive. So far (only about a month of use) so good, even after having dropped an 8ft 2x4 about 4ft from a wall storage rack directly on to the lip.
A concern may be the lip pulling loose from the coaming. I just made sure I had a good bond. Figured worse case scenario, redo the lip.
