In Response To: Strip: Coaming question (Wes)

: I'm about ready to glass the coaming lip (step 9 on p 115 of Nick's book). It
: seems unlikely to me that I'll be able to get the fiberglass to wrap from
: inside the stockade to the top of the lip and then around the edge of the
: lip to the under-lip. Will it be enough to have a good solid layer of
: fiberglass from the inner stockade to the top of lip and end at the edge
: of the lip (and just make sure that the under-lip is well coated with
: epoxy)?

: As always, thanks!

Wes,

just did that last week on my first kayak, it worked quite well. IŽll describe what I did, pick and choose your own method :)

First I taped the outer side of the riser with masking tape, leaving bare about 1/4'' below the lip. Filleted the corner between coaming lip and coaming riser with thickened epoxy. I had to put the boat on its side to get my eyes under the lip. While the fillet was still wet, I spread fresh epoxy on the all sides of the coaming. Then I laid a bias-cut glass strip over the top (several shorter ones really, but that was unnecessary).

Next, I lovingly bent the glass over the lip (5/16'' thick), and lightly pressed it into the fresh fillet. It stayed put like under a spell. Whew, that felt good... Now, I bent it over the inside coaming corner and had it conform to the inside of the riser. And suddenly it was done. I added more epoxy to some spots that wanted it, and went to bed whistling.

The next morning I looked at a coaming riser that had starved glass showing all over the end grain of the riser. DOH! Should have baby-sitted it at least two more hours...so- respect the end grain, it will keep sucking. The job was completed by cutting out the surplus glass on the outside riser with the stanley knife and removing the masking tape.

PS: I read the fresh-fillet strategy in a post by Shawn Baker, thanks man !
