I built from a kit (a Roy Folland Sea Wolf). Kits vs. plans is a personal decision. I chose a kit because time was more important to me than money. Also I didn't want to deal with the bother of getting the parts one place, the plans from another, etc. But thats just me. It took me about 100 hours to get the boat in floating shape (notice I didn't say finish, I still need to cover the seat and back with cloth, put a second coat of varnish on the inside, etc)
