Aside from enhanced draping, there may be some strength gain from having more fibers crossing joint lines. If you lay the cloth parallel with the joint lines, only half of the fiber bundles cross at 90 degrees. On the bias, all the bundles cross at 45 degrees. This may apply more to S & G chines and strip hull-deck joints.
