: In preparing for my first wet out for a S&G I have been rereading a range of
: "how to literature".
: Nick Schade recommends cutting out fiberglass on an angle for the deck and
: hull primarily to make the most effecient use of the glass. Others
: recommend making sure the fibres run parallel with the boat.
: Is there any sort of consensus on this issue or does it really matter?

Hey Grant,
Cutting on the bias makes efficient use of the glass. On the "L" that I'm working on, (18'x23") I cut 9 full size pieces from a roll of 4oz glass 60"x35yds long. Most people go lighter on the glass, but I'm a big guy and tend to do a little heavier layup. I dont like to do repairs!! I ,hopefully, have enough scraps left for the hatch lips, extra re-enforcing around the cockpit, and seat. If any scraps are left, they will go on paddle blades.(you never have too many paddles). If the piece is as big as my hand, I hold on to it till I'm done - very little will be trashed!
FWIW - Newfound Woodworks has a video of the glassing procedure which I bought to review before my first wet-out. Usually, if I can see it, I can do it. I was doing three 6oz layers at once on the hull so I wanted no mistakes. The best thing that I got from the video was to start in the middle and progress slowly outward toward the ends. Nick says the same thing in his book, but, I couldn't get Nick to "move" in the book. And, believe me, it was SLOW with that much glass AND working alone in the middle of the night! But, the video helped ease my mind somewhat and the job was completed.
Here's a pic of that same hull.
Happy Building.
Charles.
