Marketing a wooden boat is tough. The "masters" get their asking price. The rest of us can possibly sell it for materials. Know how to make a small fortune in boats? Start with a large fortune.

: I was at a sporting good store today, and i totally forgot that one could get
: a decent plastic boat for 700 bux the price of a kit.

And I built my last boat - a Cormorant hybrid S&G with a stripped deck, sourced materials myself, for $201.50.

: Now it has me
: wondering if i should just buy a plastic boat since it will last longer

Depends on your definition of "last longer". If you are really hard on boats, a plastic boat will last longer. If you take moderate care of your boat, and varnish it every year or every other year, and repair as necessary, a wood composite boat can last you 20-30 years. A plastic boat will start losing its plasticizer and get brittle in 15-20 years. Store either inside and out of sunlight for longest life.

: and stand up better in rivers.

A lot of wooden sea kayaks aren't designed to perform optimally in rivers anyway. I wouldn't trade my wooden sea kayaks for the nicest composite glass or plastic sea kayak. My whitewater boats are both plastic, however, and it's the best material for running into rocks.

: however if it spossible to sell the wood boat and get a good amount or even more, than i wouldn't feel so bad.

Build the wood boat because you want a wood boat. If you just want a kayak, buy the first thing you see, get a wetsuit, a PFD, some lessons, and get on the water post haste. There's a lot of joy to be had by some in building kayaks. There's also a lot of joy to be had by being on the water. We can't expect that building a boat should appeal to you just because it appeals to us. But don't expect to turn a tidy profit on a handmade boat...especially on your first one. If you enjoy woodworking, and want to be able to paddle your own creation, the feeling is unmatched.
