Like the other folks said, don't build a wood boat because you want a boat. Build a wood boat because you "WANT TO BUILD" a boat. If the process and time committment of building isn't appealing to you, or if you are just trying to save money, then don't even start one. You would be likely to end up frustrated, rushed, and potentially end up with a boat that reflects that very thing.
The fact that building a boat yourself ends up cheaper than most good composite boats is just an added benefit. But many builders would build their own even if it were more expensive (and if you have to buy table saws, routers, etc, it can be more expensive at the beginning.)
Just my 2 cents.
