I echo Tom Yost's response. Everywhere in life there is a trade off. At least with humans and the planet. Unless he is driving an electric car powered by solar generators, he still has an impact in much worse way. Not to mention, in order to build that car there is much more significant inpact to build that car with pollution, resources for steel fabrication and plastic molding, and the tires that will end up in the dump.

The impact of one cedar tree that allows 20+ kayaks to be built is a significantly less impact than other alternatives (jet skis, power boats, etc.) I'm sure that many of the fellow kayakers (I'm including myself as a soon as I'm finished) tend to look at the enviornment in a much more critical way. I can't believe how much of other peoples trash that I have to pick up because of their blatent disreguard for the environment.

I recycle and practice forestry management on my small 6 acre home site, and feel using 6-8 boards and a couple gallons of chemicals is my reward for practicing sound resource management.

As Tom stated, we have a lot of other mega corporations that exponentially devistate the natural resources via depletion or polution, that if not one more wood kayak was built, it would make no difference in the big scheme of things.

So I'm with you Tom, WHERE's THAT BEER?

DAVE
