Big topic. This is my opinion. Humans are going to consume resources: plants, water, plastics... no way around it. The difference we can make as individuals is in our daily choices. If you make the boat yourself then you can choose how ecologically friendly it is, you can choose how resilient it will be and how long it will last. I think most would agree that making a lasting object of value (a house, fine furniture, a boat) is a wise use of resources. Putting a factory made fiberglass boat on a credit card may or may not be a wise use of resources... the distinction is simply that we have less control of how responsibly it was made/less control of how well it will last.

The other aspect of this is something that was covered last year in Wooden Boat... trees are the ultimate renewable resource. And, if you are building a boat, you'd be hard pressed to find a more ecologically friendly material. If you have problems with epoxy and fiberglass then just do it the old way. I'd love to see the price of wood rise even higher. That discourages waste/encourages builders to use local species. Just my warped opinions :)
