Bamboo is strong. And if you can get some pre-manufactured strips all the more power to you. I've thought of doing the same. The other earlier string delves into the environmental impact. Bamboo is going to have minimum impact on the environment. All that said...

Your wood is the center of the sandwich. You could use pink foam core strips (which are used to build larger one off boats) or cork or balsa wood or bamboo for all it matters. Yes the core will have a factor on the sandwich strength and compression but those 2 factors can be adjusted for with the type of fiberglass/epoxy chosen and the thickness of the core.

From what I remember, Bamboo is incredibly strong. It's also heavier than what we normally use for stripping. So maybe you could go with thinner strips. I also think you're not going to have much of an issue with compression of the core.

Didn't they use bamboo for early airplanes right alongside spruce?
