When you coat with epoxy you're sealing the wood from invasion. No water, no air, no microbes should get in. Anything already in the wood is entombed. I'm not a scientist but I think that without continuous sources of water and air all microbes are caput so there's no danger of rot. Putting anything between the wood and the epoxy can louse up the bond and invite invasion.
