Hey James,

The easies way to explain "telegraphing" is: imagine glassing over a lump or a small place where you plucked a little wood out with a plane and didn't sand it out. The lump or the low spots would "telegraph" right through the glass and show up on the surface. Inevitably, it would have to be filled or sanded down, whatever the case, to achieve a smooth finish.

In my case, I'm seeing the joints between many of the strips of walnut. I'm having trouble determining if the joints are moving, or if they are slightly raised or slightly recessed.

Hopefully, someone who may have seen this before can help me understand whats causing this and what to do about it. (short of re-doing the deck)
