: Charles,

: I'm not sure what you mean by telegraphing, so I will take a guess. First of
: all, it sounds like you had a humidity change in your shop causing the
: wood to swell on the non-coated side, which would make it want to pull
: away from the forms.

What I'm seeing is a line in the surface of the epoxy following the joints between the strips. I can't determine wheather its raised or recessed - its very slight, but, is readily visible in the areas with the reflected light. And, your right abt the humidity change. This time of year in Florida its constantly changing.

Now, about your question. Consider that epoxy shrinks
: as it cures. If you had small gaps between strips that was mostly filled
: by resin, the resin will tend to "dimple" in that area later
: because the resin is thicker there. Also, by pulling in more curve with
: straps, any gaps on the top side would tend to increase. If this is the
: case, more fill will fix the problem. I don't see how glassing the inside
: is going to correct this.

My idea or question concerning glassing the inside was that if it was caused by movement in the joints . . then would the inside seal coat and glass stop the movement. The delima for me is - whats causing it for certain? Your thoughts above sounds feasibly as it has been up to 100*F in my work area, then thunder storms with temps dropping into the upper 60's at night. I don't see any signs of this in the white pine - but it would be much harder to see there.

: There are a couple other things down the road to think about. When you glass
: the inside of the deck, you should make sure to pull in the proper amount
: of curve so that when the resin sets up, the deck will match up with the
: hull. This will also help if you are going to make hatches. If you don't
: do this, the hatch areas will be under tension and will flatten out when
: you cut them free from the deck. Then you will have a very hard time
: keeping them from leaking because the curve of the deck will be different
: than the curve of the hatch.

I had already decided to get it pulled back to the right width before glassing the inside, but hadn't thought abt the possible problems with the hatch covers. I'm glad you brought that to my attention.

: Hope this helps,
: Ted

Thanks Ted,

Your thoughts and suggestions are very much appreciated.

Charles.
