I can't get your picture so no idea of what type of paddle. On my Greenland style paddles, which are made of cedar and have no glue joints, I use NO finish. The finish will either be only a very thin layer and hence easily scratched, or add considerable weight, defeating one of the main advantages of this style of paddle. Unfinished cedar paddles will take many years of heavy and abusive use, so a finish is certainly not necessary. Car doors are the biggest hazard, and a finish isn't going to help with that problem; might even make it harder to repair.
