It is much less about the "recommended position" and much more about the measurements of the paddlers and the bulkhead and footbraces you will use. For my GA, I put the stern hatch starting about 9" behind the cockpit. That way I could put a 3" minicell bulkhead in place and still have some room behind the seat for stuff. For the forward hatch, I sat in the then two piece boat and worked out where my feet landed, added a few inches for the footbraces, added a few inches for the bulkhead, added a couple more inches to get some setback from the bulkhead, then drew my lines and cut.
