In Response To: Strip: gluing strips (Brian H)

: Can anyone with experience tell me if it is better to leave the excess glue
: between strips to set up and scrape it all off when finished or try and
: wipe up the glue after each strip is placed. I am worried about glue
: staining the wood and being noticeable under the glass Thanks

I let the glue dry and scrape. But then I also have very little glue squeeze-out
because I apply a line of glue half the width of the strip.

To apply a fine line of glue practice the following:

Keep you glue bottle full and the tip clean. This will make the flow respond to
the slightest pressure you apply squeezing the bottle and when you release pressure
the bottle will suck in the glue in the tip. If your bottle is half full the glue will continue
to flow all over.

Wear rubber gloves as you apply the glue. Hold the glue bottle in one hand and use a finger
of your other hand to guide the glue bottle tip on the strip edge. With a finger tip half on
the glue bottle tip and half on the strip edge you can move the glue bottle very swiftly
along the strip edge and apply fine glue line.

This works well for strips in place on the boat. I start stripping on the sheer line of the hull
and work up using this glue application method.

Once I round the bilge of the hull I stop and strip the football from the keel out.
The strips on the hull bottom are horizontal making it impossible to apply glue to
strips already in place on the hull bottom.

So, on these strips I use a different glue application technique.

After dry fitting the strip in place, I remove the strip and place a couple spring clamps
on the bottom edge of the strip and set the strip on the top edges of the stations. This holds
the strip vertically and in place so I can apply glue to the edge. Hold the glue bottle in one hand
and extend your little finger ( like you're having tea with the Queen) and use the tip of your
little finger to guide the tip of the glue bottle on the edge of the strip.

Once you get the hang of applying a fine glue line you will have very little glue squeeze-out and
scraping to do.

All the best,
