An alternative is to go for an "Ocean" style cockpit. On my hybrid Cormorant
I made the cockpit 59x47cm, so when seated, my knees are well forward of the
front rim of the cockpit. That means I didn't need to do any faffing about
with the cockpit outline - just glued foam knee bumps an inch or so beyond
the front cockpit rim. That, together with a dihedral front bulkhead placed
exactly in the right place for my size means that this boat is a better fit
than anything else I've ever paddled. Getting in and out isn't a problem, as
the shape of the aft recess means the bit I sit on before sliding both legs
into the cockpit is really strong. I can vouch for the possibility of a wet
exit in rough sea and being able to get back into the cockpit from an over-
the-deck rescue with this size of cockpit. But I came closer to a successful
roll with a fully laden kayak than I've ever managed previously when out
practicing. A bit more practice in a slightly less threatening location
reveals that I can roll this boat more easily than anything else I've tried.

Remember - you don't have to build a boat "as drawn".
