Hi Bill,
All of the deck beams on the boat are recessed slightly so once it's skinned, the skin won't lie flat on the wooden beams. This is done by cutting the beams 1/8" shorter than the distance between the gunnels. If you are referring to the deck beam showing second up from the bow, that's a special construction "feature" of my own doing. When I drilled the holes through the gunnel from the outside, into the deck beams for pegging, I got the angle wrong and came out through the top of the beam with the drill bit. To cover remedy the situation, I epoxied small shaped blocks on both sides. Fortunately, this deck beam is the foot brace, so it might actually provide some benefit in having a slightly larger surface to brace against.
