: I built one stitch-n-glue kayak from a kit. Now I will build one or more from
: plans. I have hand saws, but no sabre saw. Should I get one or stick with
: my japanese hand saws? Sabre saws range from $30 to nearly $200, maybe
: more. What price range has the best values? Why pay more than $50 for one?
If price were your only consideration you wouldn't ask, you 'd just go out and buy a cheap
one.
This question is as complicated or easy as asking which boat to build.
If you'd like a kayak that is maybe more challenging to your skills then you may
wish to have a tool that has more capacity than you know.
Tool companies have made their name by the outstanding refinements they made
to one or two specific tools.
If you look at the hand power tools in a tradesman's shop you will see the same choices.
I learned this working in the trades.
Porter Cable is know for belt sanders and routers.
Milwaukee is know for drills and the Sawsall.
Bosch is know for sabre saws.
Every other sabre saw maker tries to copy the Bosch sabre saw.
You can cut-out a hatch on thin stripper laminate as smooth as
slicing butter.
You can cut a curve in a 2 x 4 oak board.
This saw will outlast you. And you will smile every time you use it.
All the best,
