I would do like Rob suggested and add a couple of more strips to the shear before trying for separation. At that point you can use the mallet approach (which would just scare the bejeebies out of me) or you can use a piece of builders string and actually saw through the glue without any risk of harming the wood. I learned to use builders string to saw through PVC pipe and applied that simple knowledge to the hot glue. Sometimes you need to saw through more than one time because the sawing heats up the glue and it can respan the gap before it cools.
