: Joe, I use alternating dark and light wood for my coaming lip and tried to
: use pine. The problem I has that even with fairly good qualiy pine it
: tended to split when I tried to bend it. It was 1/8 " thick. Any
: thinner and I'd have to line up 12 strips for the coaming and that would
: be too much work. So I ended up using ash ( left over from my external
: stems) which was VERY plyable as you know, for my light color wood. Poplar
: might be another tight grain wood that might work. But if you are going
: have to buy something, buy ash. My dark color wood was walnut and
: surprisingly I had no problem bending it around the coaming.

I have already made lip with white pine, your right Dave , about the thickness . I made them 1/16 thick and it took me 11 strips to make the lip about 9/16 thick after sanding. I noticed after clamping the strips together, the lip was kind of wavey looking. I used spring clamps all the way around, one right next to the other, the clamps compressed the wood tighter in some areas then others, leaving the wavey look. No problem I just sanded it fair. Will the soft wood stand up to the abuse like the hard wood. I always here about lips being made with hard wood. Wondering if the lip will hold up. Its 9/16 thick and 1/2 in wide.
