When of the best purchases you could make is a random orbital sander. You could strip that deck easily with 4 disc of coarse (80 grit) in about 2 hours. Disc (Norton) will cost about 40 cents ea. hook & loop. You won't believe the difference until you try one. You're doing double time with a square sheet sander. 60 grit Garnet might leave you with deep scars that will only create more work.
I think Lowes has the Porter Cable - with dust bag for about $65. there are many good ones, DeWalt, Makita, Sears - get a 5 inch disc.. Bosch has a 4 inch - odd ball. Even Black and Decker has one for about $40. that will probably be fine. The slower rpm;'s won't heat and clog disc and the dust collector helps with that too unlike a drill. And a square sander is just inefficient for a strip job. Good for in-between varnish coats.
A ROS will be a purchase you will never regret and wonder why you havent done it long ago - especially with kayak building.
You'll use it extensively throughout the building process more than any other tool.
