Whatever Colin, I'm not a forestry professional. I am just relaying first hand observations I have made while visiting the unlogged valleys here in Washington State (there are still a few left in the most rugged areas). I guess I am also trying to look at the bright side of the fairly depressing reality, depicted in the article, that will undoubtedly unfold over the next few decades... and I am fully prepared to be wrong on the subject. That doesn't stop me from trying the point :)

In my experience, the largest trees survive because they are sheltered from storm by unique land features. The timeframe for these trees are 800 years, 1000 years and up. A lot can happen in that time. And yes, a stroll through a local rainforest is a stroll over and through fallen trees everywhere you look. We must be from different areas because we get a lot of fire here; less often in the coastal rainforests but one of the most famous valleys in the Hoh rainforest is marred from fire.

I guess the one point we have in common is a general dislike for logging but, I too am a woodworker living in a wooden house.
