Jim,
Check out ceiling tile staples, they appear to be already sharpened. Also, after staples are removed, try applying steam from an iron through a cloth to the staple holes. If the wood is not torn or crushed this will tend to close the holes down quite a bit. The negative to this is that it also tends to raise the grain.
