Hi,
I'm getting all ready to start building my first strip kayak. But in preparation for the finished product, I was looking for a roof rack. Unfortunately the camper shell on my truck is not symmetrical. The front of the camper is level with the roof of the cab, but then there is a 4" loft about 1.5' from the front of the camper. Before I invest in a solution, I was wondering if anyone has come across the same issue. I've thought of a couple solutions, but I'm not sure how successful they will be.
1- Lofting the front brackets of a roof rack (somehow).
2- Yakima now has a "roof rack" system consisting of a rack on the cab, and an adjustable attachment to the trailer hitch that comes up to a large "T" for the rear rack. If I could raise that rear rack high enough I could clear that rise in the camper shell. Would that result in any instability of the kayak? It also seems that there is a small degree of torsion between the bed and the cab, could that damage a kayak? I wouldn't want to break the boat before I could even get it wet.
3-Attaching the rear rack lower down on the side of the camper, and mounting the front brackets on top of the camper.
Thanks,
nick
