Hi Rick and Ann
The usual advice is to use foam bulkheads so that the bottom of the kayak can flex as it passes over rocks etc. If you have a rigid bulkhead you run the risk of breaking the wood at the bulkhead. I have heard of those who combine the two. They make the bottom inch or two of foam and set the plywood into that. You can then still have a stronger bulkhead and use it as a foot brace if you wish. I have not tried that, but if I did, I would use thicker plywood as the bottom edge will flex.
