Thanks for the response. I thought of the 1x2 layup after my post (Doh!). Easy enough to find cedar that'd work that way. Found Don's posts. That's impressive stuff, but I don't think I want to go that far on my first effort.

Been noodling a foam core glass/carbon layup too, but that's probably not a first-time effort either. And it somehow misses the point.
