Since we want you to be able to come up with more new ideas next week, why not first try sharpening those staples with a file or emeryboard.
Rehd's worries about staples flying back at you are well founded.
One point no one has made. When you miss the wood and drive the staple into your fingertip it doesn't matter if the staple has a "factory" edge or is even sharper. It still hurts and you still feel foolish for injuring yourself. Oh, and the blood stains take a bit more effort to sand out.
