Hi Richard

Wider supports or racks should keep them safe and secure.

Try going to Ross Leidy's home page and then to his kayak cradles. He makes them look really easy.
You could make them a few inches wide, shaped to make good solid contact with keel, chines and gunnals. Strapped down, they should be a solid ride.
