I will add to Chip's well articulated response by adding that putting a face on the project can go a long way. People love mascots and it makes it personal. When a person sees a childs face or threatened animal (even an illustration or photo), they are touched on a personal level that relates to someone or something that they love. It's part of that motivation thing Chip mentioned. Good Luck.
