Assuming that you have a reasonable rack spread (at least three feet or so) and assuming traditional SOF kayak construction (that is very resilient), you should not need the 'A' frames.
The bow and stern lines are attached from near the ends of each kayak (details depend on the kayak deck rigging) to the frame/bumper of your car. Any shift in the load is indicated by a slackening in the lines. Be careful with the bow lines. Should one become loose and should you drive over it, the attached kayak will likely suffer major damage.
