It is possible to purchase "sinker" cypress in LA. It is milled from the old growth cypress trees that were cut years ago. The logs sunk to the bottom of the bayous and lakes as they were being transported to the mills. There are sawmills around the area that specialize in this lumber. The trees are raised from the water and milled into lumber. There is no comparison between the color of sinker cypress and older salvaged lumber to the current lumber yard stuff. The old growth stuff is much darker and contains a wider range of color variations. The current lumber yard cypress is lighter in color, almost like pine. Both can by used for strips. The older wood will be slightly heavier. I've used cypress on all of my boats. My Wee Lassie was made completely of sinker cypress. It's actually darker than it appears in the picture.
